The Constitutional Council of Chad has confirmed Mahamat Idriss Deby as the contentious May 6 presidential election winner, dismissing challenges from two losing candidates and solidifying his family’s decades-long hold on power.
Deby, who assumed control in 2021 after his father’s death, President Idriss Deby, garnered 61% of the vote.
His closest rival, Succes Masra, received 18.54%, according to the council’s announcement on Thursday.
Despite Chad’s strategic role as a Western ally against extremist groups in the Sahel region, the election has been marred by allegations of fraud and irregularities.
International observers, including rights groups, have criticized the election’s fairness and credibility.
Masra, serving as prime minister of a transitional government, had contested the preliminary results, claiming electoral fraud.
However, the constitutional council ruled that his complaint, along with another from candidate Albert Pahimini Padacke, lacked sufficient evidence.
