The senator representing Abia North Senatorial Zone, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has proposed the sum of 90,000 as the new minimum wage.

Senator Kalu made the proposal during plenary on Tuesday, stressing that the impact of the stike on the economy is something the country shouldn’t allow to happen again because of the adverse effect.
“I’ll like Mr. President and the entire senate to pay more attention to these people (organised labour) because I know how much people have lost in the last 24 hours. I think 60,000 might be sounding very huge, let us (Senate) see what we can do in persuading both the labour and federal government in looking at between 75,000 to 90,000.
He said the figure represents the current inflation in the country and as such, the labour should consider it.

The former Abia governor said if the situation is allowed to continue the way it’s, the one week postponement, won’t serve anybody’s interest and the country might be back to disruption of power supply.

“….shutting down the national grid, Mr. President isn’t an easy job. That might take another 3 days to come back to full operation.

“Everybody must step up today, if it means suspending the plenary for the leadership of the senate to meet with the labour leaders and the federal government, so be it.

He said that the senate shouldn’t watch and things will degenerate
