The Nigerian Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, has advised university students to remain on campus during the planned nationwide protests from August 1 to 10, 2024.
In a statement issued by the National Universities Commission (NUC) on Monday, the minister cited concerns for the students’ safety and security.
The statement, signed by NUC’s acting Executive Secretary Chris Maiyaki, directed Vice-Chancellors of universities to take proactive measures to ensure the security and safety of staff, students, and university property.
The minister also urged students to focus on their academic pursuits and avoid potential dangers during the protests.
The planned protests, organized under the hashtag ‘#EndBadGovernance’, have gained traction on social media, prompting calls from the presidency and police authorities for youths to shelve the demonstration.
The government has acknowledged the right to peaceful protest but emphasized the need for safety and security.
