“Mr President Has Allocated Over N340bn In The 2024 Budget Towards Improving Power Infrastructures In The Country, This Will Improve Nigeria’s Electricity Supply”.
Rt Hon Femi Gbajabiamila, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Chief of Staff (COS), disclosed on Saturday that the Federal Government allocated N340 billion in the 2024 Budget to improve power sector infrastructure.
Additionally, Gbajabiamila stated that the Tinubu administration maintained constant communication with stakeholders in the power sector to address the multifaceted challenges hindering stable electricity supply in the country.
The Chief of Staff made this announcement while speaking at the commissioning of two units of a 20MVA injection substation in Surulere, Lagos. This project, a public–private sector partnership between the Federal Government and Eko Distribution Company, underlines President Tinubu’s commitment to enhancing electricity supply nationwide.
Gbajabiamila, represented by Senator Wasiu Sanni Eshinlokun, emphasized Tinubu’s concerns regarding energy theft, estimated billing, and the theft of power infrastructure. He urged Nigerians to protect power infrastructure in their communities, while also urging Distribution Companies (Discos) to address issues of estimated billing and poor meter distribution.
“Citizens must protect power infrastructure in their various communities as we expect the electricity distribution companies to address cases of estimated billing and poor meter distribution,” Gbajabiamila said.
Furthermore, Gbajabiamila stressed that access to reliable electricity is not a privilege but a fundamental right. He highlighted the importance of collective investment in projects that empower citizens and drive the nation forward.
“As we always say, access to reliable electricity is not a privilege; it is a fundamental right that drives productivity, fosters innovation, and improves the quality of life for all citizens,” he stated.
Regarding the challenges faced by Nigerians, the Chief of Staff mentioned President Tinubu’s efforts to alleviate these difficulties. He described the commissioned project as a beacon of hope for the future.
“The president is committed to rolling out wage awards for workers, financial support for SMEs, loans for students, unemployment benefits, and many other social security programmes to improve living conditions for all Nigerians,” Gbajabiamila added.
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, affirmed the state government’s commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to ensure stable power supply. He assured residents that within two years, some areas of the city would bid farewell to darkness.
Governor Sanwo-Olu urged residents to pay their bills promptly, refrain from assaulting Disco staff, and avoid bypassing meters, which could jeopardize the profitability of the Disco.
“I speak with you as one involved in the value chain. Change is here, and for that change to have an impact, all of us must behave responsibly,” the governor emphasized.
Mr. Derin Otubu, Chairman of Eko Electricity Distribution Plc., highlighted the significance of the day’s event, stressing the importance of light for happiness, relief, and economic activities in Surulere and its environs.
Otubu commended the contributions of Rt. Hon. Gbajabiamila in addressing the issue of sustainable power distribution. He urged residents to take ownership of the project and protect it from vandalism.
“We would satisfy you, what we get, we would distribute to you,” Otubu assured, emphasizing Eko Disco’s commitment to providing quality service to “lighten up Lagos.”
