The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has terminated its agreement with German coach Bruno Labbadia due to irreconcilable tax differences, NFF announced on Friday.

Labbadia was announced as the new Super Eagles coach on Tuesday, but the deal has been canceled after three days of negotiations.

NFF President Ibrahim Gusau cited stringent German tax laws, requiring the federation to pay an additional 32-40% of Labbadia’s salary, as the reason for the breakdown.

Gusau stated that the NFF cannot afford to shoulder this extra financial burden.

As a result, Augustine Eguavoen, NFF Technical Director, will take charge of the Super Eagles for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda. This will be Eguavoen’s fourth stint as coach of the three-time African champions.
