Niger Republic has become the second African state to cut diplomatic ties with Ukraine, following comments made by a Ukrainian official that were perceived as supportive of rebels in neighboring Mali.

The ruling military junta in Niger announced the decision on August 6, following Mali’s military rulers cutting ties with Ukraine on August 4.

The decision was made in solidarity with the government and people of Mali, according to government spokesman Abdourahamane Amadou.

Ukraine has yet to comment on the move, which follows allegations of Ukrainian involvement in an attack by rebels that resulted in the killing of dozens of Malian soldiers and Russian mercenaries.

The situation highlights the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Sahel region, where Russia has been expanding its influence by supporting military regimes facing separatist and Islamist rebellions.

The US has recently withdrawn from its military bases in Niger, handing over Airbase 201 to local authorities on August 5.
