The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) reported that as of September 3, 2024, there are 3,590 inmates on death row in Nigeria.
The total inmate population is 84,741, including 57,750 awaiting trial.
The NCoS is addressing overcrowding through new facilities, community sentencing, and improved court logistics.
Efforts have also been made to enhance inmate care and education, with 1,282 inmates enrolled in National Open University programs.
