The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is preparing for a possible strike, mobilizing its members nationwide

The union is dissatisfied with the government’s failure to sign an agreement or fulfill the terms of previous agreements

The National Executive Council will meet soon to determine the next course of action

Reasons for the Possible Strike
Some of the reasons for the possible strike include

Non-implementation of the 2009 ASUU/FG agreement

Disbanding of some Governing Council Boards of Federal Universities

Refusal to recall the boards

Non-payment of three and a half months’ salary owed to members

Continued use of the IPPIS to pay members

Implementation of the Federal Government directive mandating public universities to remit 40% of their Internally Generated Funds (IGF) to the government’s coffers

ASUU’s Previous Strike
The previous strike, which lasted eight months, was suspended in October 2022

The union decided to suspend the strike after a series of appeals from Nigerians, including the then-President Muhammadu Buhari and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila

ASUU has demanded

Adequate funding for the universities
University autonomy
Payment of lecturers’ salaries in a transparent and accountable way
A living wage for lecturers
Improvement in students’ welfare
Provision of infrastructural facilities for research, learning and training
Implementation of the agreement with the union
