A Nigerian woman who was falsely declared de@d has appeared in court via videolink from Nigeria to stop a convicted fraudster from seizing her £350,000 London home.
According to Mail Online, it was claimed that June Ashimola, 55, died in February 2019 in her native country, which sparked a bizarre long-running battle for her estate.
But she appeared before High Court judge John Linwood to declare that she was very much alive and was a victim of a scam.
The court was told Ms Ashimola had brought the case after being falsely declared d3ad and the Power of Attorney over her estate, which consisted principally of a house, was granted to associates of convicted fraudster Tony Ashikodi.
Ms Ashimola had left Britain for Nigeria in 2018 and had not returned, the court heard.
In October 2022, the power of attorney over the estate was given to Ms Ruth Samuel on behalf of Mr. Bakare Lasisi, who claimed he married Ms Ashimola in 1993.
But the judge ruled Ms Ashimola had been the victim of fraud and that Mr Lasisi did not even exist.
It was claimed Ms Ashimola d!ed in Nigeria in 2019 without leaving a will with a copy of her alleged death certificate being produced at the High Court.
Claims were made that sightings of Ms Ashimola since her alleged d3ath were actually a woman ‘masquerading’ as her.
But Ms Ashimola told the court she was only ‘allegedly deceased’, that the certificate was ‘false and fraudulent’, and the grant relating to her estate and a house in Woolwich, south east London, had been ‘improperly’ obtained.
This is an unusual probate claim in that the deceased says she is very much alive,’ Deputy Master Linwood said.
‘The root of this claim is a long running battle or campaign waged by a Mr Tony Ashikodi for control and/or ownership of the Property.
‘Ms Ashimola left the UK for Nigeria in about October 2018 and has not returned since. This claim involves wide-ranging allegations of fraud, forgery, impersonation and intimidation.’

Protesters Defy Police, Throng Streets In Abuja, Lagos, Others

The protests organised by the Take It Back Movement, are ongoing despite repeated warnings by the police.
In Abuja, Omoyele Sowore, a leader of the movement, and Deji Adeyanju, human rights lawyer, were seen leading the protest, resisting attempts of police officers to take them off the streets.
In Lagos, group of protesters were seen with placards in Ikeja, capital of the state.
In Rivers, the organisers converged on Isaac Boro Park in Port Harcourt, but were teargassed before the protest gained momentum.
The police authorities had warned against the protest, saying scheduling it to hold on the same day designated by the government as National Police Day was unacceptable.
In a statement, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, said the planned protest appears to be a deliberate attempt to tarnish the image of the Nigeria Police and, by extension, the nation.
The statement said, “The Nigeria Police Force has read in the news that a group called ‘Take it Back Movement’ is planning a protest across various states of the Federation, most especially the Federal Capital Territory, scheduled to hold on Monday 7th April, 2025, a day earmarked by the Federal Government as the National Police Day, to celebrate the resilience and dedication of officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force.
“While not against the exercise of citizens right to peaceful assembly and association in Nigeria as enshrined in the Constitution, the Nigeria Police Force is deeply concerned about the motive behind such protest scheduled on the same day the contributions of the Nigeria Police Force to national security is to be celebrated, putting into consideration that such glamorous event would bring together dignitaries from all spheres of life both internationally and within the country, including Foreign Inspectors-General of Police and Diplomats.
“In line with best global practices adopted by nations in celebrating the achievements of its Police institution, the Nigerian Government has taken the bull by the horns by declaring every April 7 as National Police Day.
“The rationale behind staging a nationwide protest on the same day is, however, questionable and perceived to be a deliberate attempt and unpatriotic act that is capable of rubbishing and maligning the image of the Nigeria Police and the nation as a whole.
“The Nigeria Police Force hereby advises the organisers to shelve this planned protest as it is ill-timed and mischievous.”
The statement called on individuals intending to join the protest to engage in discussions with appropriate government agencies instead of taking to the streets.
The take-it-back movement said it called for a nationwide demonstration to address what it called the “authoritarianism of President Bola Tinubu administration, abuse of human rights and the misuse of the Cybercrime Act.”

A local farmer’s wife identified as Abosede has lost her life in a canoe accident on the Erekiti River, Lagos State.
The incident occurred on Sunday, as Abosede, her husband Jesuyon, and her 17-year-old sister, Mary, were making their way home from the farm.
According to reports, the canoe carrying the trio suddenly capsized midstream, throwing all occupants into the water.
Jesuyon and Mary managed to survive the incident. A source close to the family said the farmer, in a desperate effort, swam to safety with his sister-in-law, but was unable to rescue his wife as the river swept her away.
Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the development, noting that a coordinated search is currently underway to recover Abosede’s body.
“Based on the report, teams of Marine policemen and local divers were mobilised for a search and rescue operation. Efforts are ongoing to recover the missing body. The investigation is in progress,” Hundeyin said.
The community remains in shock as the search continues along the Erekiti River.
