NNL Week 5: “We’ll reclaim lost points” — Abakaliki FC Captain Ifeanyin

Abakaliki Football Club captain Ezeama Ifeanyi has boasted that the team would reclaim all the points lost in their previous matches.

The team defeated Rover FC 1-0 to break the jinx since their first appearance in the 2024 season of the Nigeria National League, NNL, in a home match that took place at the Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital.

Addressing newsmen, the chairman of Abakaliki FC, Senator Obinna Ogba, faulted the cancellation of the second goal and described the win as a thing of necessity, thanking the players for making the management proud.

“I am happy we broke the jinx; from onwards, I am sure they will be winning. Though I don’t understand why the referee should cancel the second goal, his decision is final,” he said.

The Ebonyi State Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Prince Richard Idike, appreciated the team for their high level of discipline, noting that they showed great commitment towards the victory.

He acknowledged the team’s readiness to take the stage fully and maintained optimism that the De Rice Boys would come out better in their next match with Madiba Football Club in Lagos.

“With what I have seen so far, the team has started blending and understanding themselves better. I am expecting a win in our next match in Lagos State,” Idike added.

Flamingos qualify for 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup

Nigeria’s Flamingos sealed a place in the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after holding Algeria to a 0-0 draw in Blida.

Bankole Olowookere’s side won the final qualifying round contest 4-0 on aggregate.

The Flamingos dominated the second leg tie but were let down by their poor finishing.

The wintry conditions in Blida also made things difficult for the girls.

Algeria came close to winning the game one minute from time but were denied by the woodwork.

The Flamingos were eliminated by the United States of America at the quarter-final stage of the last edition of the competition.

This year’s edition of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup will kick off on October 17 in Morocco.

Barcelona manager, Hansi Flick has named his side’s squad to face Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey final on Saturday night.

This year’s Copa del Rey final between Barcelona and Real Madrid will take place at Seville’s Estadio La Cartuja.

Barcelona head into the game following a 1-0 victory over Mallorca in their last LaLiga fixture, while Real Madrid also secured a 1-0 win against Getafe.

Flick has named a squad that includes the likes of Lamine Yamal, Ter Stegen, and Pedri to face Carlo Ancelotti’s men.

Barcelona’s squad to face Real Madrid:

Ter Stegen, Cubarsí, R. Araujo, I. Martinez, Gavi, Ferran, Pedri, Ansu Fati, Raphinha, Iñaki Peña, Pablo Torre, Christensen, Fermín, Pau Víctor, Lamine Yamal, Olmo, F. De Jong, Kounde, Eric, Szczęsny, H. Fort, and Gerard Martín.

Kick-off is scheduled for 9 pm, Nigerian time.

Meanwhile, Barcelona currently sit atop the LaLiga table, ahead of second-placed Real Madrid.
