NURTW IMO STATE CHAPTER ON SENSITISATION EXERCISE

Imo State chapter of National Union Of Road Transport Workers under the chairmanship of Comr Dr Chief Samuel Udeh JP (Eze Umuokorobia) yesterday second day of July alongside with Imo State commissioner of police CP Aboki Danjuma and Hon Frank Onwumere Special Adviser to Imo State Governor on Illegal Parks and Park Management went on a road sensitisation in some of the parks in the State capital, which includes Control and Douglas axis.

The exercise is inline with agenda of the State government in fulfilling the promises of transport and traffic management in the State.

They sensitised the transporters and enlightened them on the necessity of maintaining road orderliness, and avoid causing obstruction on the major roads in the State.

Amb Samuel Udeh while addressing the union members in the various parks visited, called on the drivers to shun loading and offloading along the roads and directed for immediate closure of illegal parks in the State.

He further said; It is important to sensitize the general public especially transport workers about the importance of road safety. This will further help create awareness and reduce accident rates and road mishaps.

He tasked them to join hands with the State government to restore road dignity and have a free flow of traffic in the State capital.

Chief Sam Udeh a member of the national trustee of the union stated that with strict adherence to road safety rules and maintaining of road orderliness, it is certain that road casualties and jamlock on the roads can be minimised.

He pledged unalloyed support to the State government and union resolution to be law abiding and committed with government policies and programmes geared towards a better Imo.

Hon Frank Onwumere enjoined road users to partner with the State Government towards overcoming traffic challenges, and urged them not to stand aloof but to play their roles to ensure a free flow of Traffic on the major roads.

He also noted that the offences are strict liability offences and are punishable under the Transport Sector Law.

CP Danjuma commended NURTW for this laudable initiative of sensitising residents on the consequences attached to the violation of traffic laws and operating of illegal parks in the State.

He added that the acts of lawlessness, recklessness and impunity being exhibited by some commercial drivers were worrisome as they grossly violate traffic laws and constituting nuisance on the roads.

Appealing to the residents, especially motorists in the state, to desist from violating traffic laws, CP Aboki said that the Command together with the other sister agencies in the State would implement full enforcement on violators when apprehended.
