Ohanaeze Blasts Southeast Leaders, Calls Inaction on Nnamdi Kanu a ‘Betrayal

Southeast governors have faced accusations of “willful neglect” regarding the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

This criticism was voiced by Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a prominent socio-political organization in the southeast.

In a statement signed by Secretary General Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Ohanaeze Ndigbo remarked:

“This ongoing inaction isn’t just an oversight; it represents a conscious betrayal of the trust and aspirations of the Igbo people. At such a pivotal time, we must examine both the nature of this neglect and the potential impact it could have.”

On July 2, 2024, at the Lion Building in Enugu’s Government House, the Southeast Governors met with esteemed figures, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe.

During the meeting, the Governors pledged to support Kanu’s release, committing to speak with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on this pressing matter. However, four months have passed without any visible action on this promise.

According to Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Kanu’s extended detention is influenced by both domestic political challenges and “international interests backed by local allies.”

The group also suggested a strategic plan for Kanu’s release, which involves rallying international support, engaging traditional leadership, and promoting ceasefires among advocacy groups.

“Let it be clear: the inaction of the Southeast Governors reflects a deep disregard for Kanu and his supporters.

“The hesitancy of some traditional and religious leaders within the Igbo community to actively support Kanu during critical periods also raises questions about their commitment. Were their appearances in court merely symbolic, lacking true dedication?

“We call on the Southeast Governors to consider the consequences of their neglect. The well-being of Nnamdi Kanu and the integrity of leadership require decisive, responsible action.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo is steadfast in the quest for justice, and we will continue our efforts until Nnamdi Kanu is freed. We urge the Ndigbo community to remain alert and engaged to ensure that our collective demand for justice is realized,” the group concluded.
