AC Milan has appointed Paulo Fonseca as their new head coach, marking a significant return to Italy for the former Roma manager.

The announcement was made on Thursday, with club representative Zlatan Ibrahimovic confirming Fonseca’s three-year contract.

Fonseca, who most recently managed French club Lille since 2022, will succeed Stefano Pioli, who was dismissed following the conclusion of the 2023-24 season after a five-year tenure.

Fonseca, 51, was born in Nampula, Mozambique, and began his coaching career in Portugal, leading teams such as Pacos de Ferreira, Porto, and Braga.

His tenure at Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk was particularly successful, where he secured seven trophies and amassed an impressive record of 103 wins in 139 matches.

He then took charge at Roma in 2019, achieving fifth and seventh-place finishes in Serie A before moving to Lille, where he led the team to fifth and fourth-place finishes in Ligue 1, securing European competition in both seasons.

In the latest season, AC Milan, who last won the Serie A title in 2022, finished a distant second to city rivals Inter Milan.
