The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has emerged victorious in 30 out of the 31 local government areas in Akwa Ibom State, following the local government elections held on Saturday, October 5.

The Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC), chaired by Aniedi Ikoiwak, announced the results at its headquarters on Udo Udoma Avenue.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) won in Essien Udim, the local government area of the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

Alongside its overall success, the PDP also won the majority of councillorship positions across the state, further consolidating its dominance.

Despite the results, the APC has rejected the outcome, accusing the PDP of rigging, violence, and electoral malpractice.

In a statement signed by APC’s state publicity secretary, OtoAbasi Udo, the party criticized AKISIEC, alleging it compromised the election’s credibility to favor the PDP.

The statement read: “On October 5, 2024, AKISIEC conducted the local government elections for the purpose of electing new chairmen and councilors. However, AKISIEC, like other State Independent Electoral Commissions, operates under the influence of the State Government, resulting in a process heavily tilted in favor of the ruling party.

“We observed a significant shortage of election materials, which disenfranchised many voters, alongside instances of financial inducements by the PDP. Nonetheless, the supporters of the All Progressives Congress turned out en masse to back our candidates.”
