Nigeria’s highly anticipated Dangote Refinery has begun test runs for petrol production, marking a milestone towards its full operation expected by mid-September.
The 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery, built by Aliko Dangote for $20 billion, has produced diesel and other distillate fuels but has yet to commence petrol production.
According to industry monitor IIR Energy, the refinery’s petrol production is on track to start in September, although further extensions are possible.
Once fully operational, the refinery is poised to revolutionize the Europe-to-Africa fuel trade and reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported refined products.
In a related development, the Federal Government has announced that the sale of crude oil to Dangote Refinery and other local refineries will commence on October 1, 2024.
The first petrol delivery from Dangote is expected next month under existing agreements.
