The Local Government Council Chairmanship and Councilorship elections set for September 21, 2024, in Imo State, Nigeria, face the possibility of postponement due to mounting political uncertainties.
According to sources close to both the authorities and electoral officials, ThePressman Newspaper in Owerri has learned that the elections may not proceed as scheduled.
The primary cause of the delay appears to be significant political maneuvering between the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
As of now, the APC has yet to release its candidate list. Meanwhile, other political parties, having concluded their primaries, are eagerly awaiting ISIEC’s official roster of candidates.
This delay in finalizing the candidate lists is critical, as the elections cannot move forward without the full preparedness of all participating entities.
With only thirteen days left before the planned election date, it is evident that both ISIEC and the APC remain unprepared.
The Electoral Commission still awaits the final list of candidates from the APC, further complicating the situation.
Given the current level of unpreparedness and ongoing political maneuvers, it is increasingly probable that the elections will be postponed to allow for adequate organization and readiness.
