On March 21, 1998, Pope John Paul II met with Nigeria’s military ruler, General Sani Abacha, during his second visit to Nigeria. His goal was to promote peace, justice, and human rights in Africa.

At the time, Nigeria was under strict military rule, with widespread human rights abuses and political oppression. The execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and other activists had led to international sanctions. Despite the tense situation, Pope John Paul II chose to meet Abacha, hoping to convince him to embrace justice and democracy.

During their meeting in Abuja, the Pope pleaded for the release of political prisoners, including Chief Moshood Abiola, the presumed winner of the annulled 1993 election. He also urged Abacha to respect human rights and democracy, reminding him of the dignity of every Nigerian.

Abacha reportedly remained silent as the Pope spoke, but many believe the visit increased pressure on his regime. Just three months later, on June 8, 1998, Abacha died suddenly under mysterious circumstances.
