President Bola Tinubu has created a new Ministry of Livestock Development to tackle the long-standing conflict between farmers and herders in Nigeria.
The move follows the recommendation of the National Livestock Reforms Committee, which submitted a report to the President in September 2023.
The committee, led by former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, proposed the establishment of a Ministry of Livestock Resources to address the conflict and improve the livestock industry’s productivity.
The new ministry will focus on providing sector-specific solutions to the farmers-herders crisis, which has resulted in loss of lives and livelihoods.
The committee also recommended the establishment of grazing reserves and the expansion of existing livestock production departments.
The government aims to improve the industry’s productivity, reduce import dependence, and enhance peaceful coexistence among citizens.
