Qualification to Contest Local Government Councils Elections.

A person qualifies to contest Local Government Council elections if they:

1. Are a Nigerian citizen.
2. Have been educated to at least the school certificate level or its equivalent.
3. For Councillorship elections, are at least 25 years old.
4. For Chairmanship elections, are at least 30 years old.
5. Are ordinarily a resident or indigene of the Ward or Local Government Area they intend to represent.
6. Provide evidence of tax payment for the three consecutive years prior to the election.
7. If they previously held a political office, provide evidence of the most recent declaration from the Code of Conduct Bureau.
8. For Councillorship elections, are nominated in writing by 20 people registered in the same Ward.
9. For Chairmanship elections, are nominated in writing by 20 people from at least two-thirds of the Wards in the Local Government Area.
10. Pay a Non-Refundable fee of:
o ₦2,500,000 for Chairmanship candidates.
o ₦1,000,000 for Councillorship candidates.
11. Have not been dismissed from public or civil service at any level.
12. Have not been convicted of an offense related to narcotic drugs or psychotropic substances.
13. Have not been convicted of treason or treasonable felony.
14. Are registered as a voter in the Ward or Local Government Area.
15. Are a member of a registered political party.
16. If running for Chairmanship, have nominated a Vice-Chairman from a different Ward.

Note:
The qualifications and disqualifications that apply to Chairmen also apply to Vice Chairmen.
