There is growing tension in Obianime-Ama community in Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State following the discovery of a ruptured pipeline leaking an unidentified petroleum product in broad daylight.
Channels Television reports that the incident, which occurred on Sunday, has raised concerns about potential environmental hazards and safety risks in the area.
The television quoted a source as saying that the affected pipeline belongs to the Pipeline and Products Marketing Company, PPMC, a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL.
According to the TV station, eyewitnesses reported that the leakage began around 2:30 pm near a location opposite the PPMC facility in Okrika LGA.
The report said that the residents are making efforts to contain the spill but the situation has remained unresolved, prompting residents to cordon off the area and restrict vehicular and motorcycle movement as a precautionary measure.
Pictures made available to Channels Television revealed the extent of the leakage, with residents expressing frustration over the lack of immediate response from the pipeline’s operators.
While some speculated that the rupture might have been caused by vandalism, others dismissed the possibility, citing the presence of security personnel guarding the facility nightly.
One resident, who chose to remain anonymous, told Channels, “It can’t be vandalism. People guard this place every night, so that kind of thing is impossible. The pipeline is old and needs to be replaced.”
It said that efforts were made to reach the Chairman of the Obianime-Ama Community Development Committee and the management of PPMC for comments but they were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre, YEAC-Nigeria, issued a press release on Sunday, confirming the incident and calling for urgent action.
According to the statement signed by its Executive Director, Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface, the leakage and subsequent explosion occurred on the PPMC pipeline right of way in Okrika.
The incident was reportedly linked to ongoing maintenance work by contractors following an earlier incident on Thursday, March 20, 2025.
YEAC-Nigeria’s youth volunteers, under the One Million Youth Volunteers Network of Human Rights Defenders and Promoters in the Niger Delta, documented the incident with video evidence showing flames erupting from the pipeline.
The inferno was eventually extinguished later the same day.

Tinubu’s Minister, Umahi Accused Of Demanding Hot $3x From Popular Business Woman

Nigeria’s Minister of Works and former Governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi, has been accused of refusing to pay a businesswoman, Tracynither Nicolas Ohiri, for promotional items she supplied during his 2014 governorship campaign.
The former governor led Ebonyi state for eight years from 2015 to 2023. Prior to that, he was a deputy governor of the state.
In an interview on Friday, Mrs Ohiri alleged that Umahi deliberately withheld the N200 million payment because she rejected his $exual advances.
She claimed that Umahi initially assured her she would be paid after he won the 2014 gubernatorial election. However, she said that when she began demanding her money, he attempted to turn their business relationship into a personal affair.
“When I supplied him with the goods, he told me that he did not have money, but that I should not worry. As soon as he finished contesting for the governorship election and won, he would repay me,” she said.
She alleged that after Umahi became governor, he started avoiding her calls and only engaged with her when she entertained his advances.
“When he won the election and became governor, I started asking him for my money, and he began asking me out,” she stated. “I gave him about a year and eight months before I started asking for my money. So, anytime I asked him for payment, he would say, ‘No problem, I’m going to pay you.’ But then he would bring up the topic he had been discussing with me.”
She further alleged that when she refused his advances, he became angry and stopped responding to her calls.
“When he mentioned it to me twice, he took offence and said, ‘Do you know that since I was born, no woman has said no to me?’ I said I don’t know about that, but I cannot have anything to do with you, sir. I want it to be purely business. The next thing he did was block me.”
Ohiri said that after years of trying to get her money, she has resorted to public protests and social media campaigns to demand payment.
Ohiri, a mother, lamented how Umahi’s alleged refusal to pay her has left her struggling financially while his son enjoys a luxurious lifestyle.
“Give me my money. I am a mother with children. I see your son flying private jets. The money your son is using to fly private jets is enough for you to pay me. You withheld my capital. I am a nursing mother; I need my payment. I have waited enough for nine years.”
Meanwhile, a similar controversy recently involved Senate President Godswill Akpabio, a key politician in Tinubu’s government.
In February 2025, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of sexual harassment, alleging that he made inappropriate advances toward her during a visit to his residence in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on December 8, 2023.
She claimed that Akpabio tacitly demanded sex from her to facilitate the consideration of her motions in the Senate.
Meanwhile, the Senate has suspended Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months, citing violations of legislative rules.

Members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, IMN, also known as the Shiites, launched an unprovoked attack on security operatives in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, on Friday.
Josephine Adeh, the Police Public Relations Officer of the FCT Command, said in a statement that during the attack, one security operative was killed, while two others were injured.
She explained that at about 2:20 pm on Friday, the FCT Police Command received a distress call reporting a violent assault on security personnel by IMN members armed with firearms, cutlasses, catapults, sticks, stones, petrol bombs, and other lethal weapons in the Banex area, Aminu Kano Crescent, Wuse 2.
“Upon swift deployment to the scene, police and security personnel encountered intense gunfire from the attackers, resulting in the serious injury of three security operatives. They were promptly transported to the National Hospital, where one was tragically pronounced dead,” she said.
The police spokesperson noted that about 19 suspects were arrested in connection with the incident, while others managed to escape.
She confirmed that normalcy has since been fully restored, and investigations are ongoing to ensure that all perpetrators are brought to justice.
“CP Ajao Saka Adewale emphasised that actions are being implemented to apprehend those responsible for this heinous act,” she added.
