Russia is firmly refusing to engage in nuclear discussions with the United States due to the latter’s push to expand NATO to additional countries.

This year, the military defense organization welcomed two new members—Sweden in March and Finland in April—but Russia views this expansion as a significant threat.

“We see no point in dialogue with Washington without respect for Russia’s fundamental interests. First of all, this is the problem of NATO’s expansion into the post-soviet space, which poses threats to common security,” said Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Earlier this week, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov indicated that Russia will not sign a new treaty with the U.S. to regulate each country’s nuclear arsenal.

Since the start of the war in Ukraine, Vladimir Putin has repeatedly threatened to use nuclear weapons.
