Senator Sumaila Kawu, representing Kano South, has revealed that his total monthly earnings amount to over N21 million, significantly higher than the N1.06 million officially reported by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).

In a recent interview with the BBC Hausa Service On Wednesday, Senator Kawu stated that while his official salary, after deductions, is around N600,000, his overall take-home pay still reaches N21 million.

This contrasts sharply with the RMAFC’s breakdown, which claims that senators earn an annual total of N12.72 million, covering basic salaries and various allowances.

This disclosure has reignited the debate over lawmakers’ earnings, following recent criticisms from former President Olusegun Obasanjo and others.

Obasanjo had condemned the practice of lawmakers setting their salaries, calling it “immoral.”

The Senate has since refuted these claims, but the controversy surrounding the true earnings of Nigeria’s federal lawmakers persists.
