Chairman of the Senate Committee on Federal Character and Inter-governmental Affairs, Distinguished Senator (Chief) Allwell Heacho Onyesoh, DSSRS, JP (Rivers East), has advocated for reforms in Nigeria’s educational system. His remarks came during a one-day retreat for Heads of State House Agencies, held on Saturday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The event, themed “Strengthening Institutional Mechanisms for Effective Delivery,” attracted top dignitaries from various government sectors, including Senator Ibrahim Hadeija, who represented Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, and the Permanent Secretary of the State House, Engr. Olufunso Adebiyi.

In his goodwill message, Senator Onyesoh commended the retreat’s timing and its potential to enhance coordination among government agencies. He urged other sectors, particularly education, to adopt similar strategies for streamlining operations and improving efficiency, all in support of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s educational system, Senator Onyesoh emphasized the importance of preserving key elements of the pre-independence system while integrating modern subjects such as security and tourism into the national curriculum. “Tourism generates substantial revenue,” he noted, advocating for a more practical, forward-thinking approach to education that addresses the current needs of society.

The Senator also praised Nigeria’s Attorney General, lauding his expertise and calm leadership. He noted that with experienced leaders like the Attorney General, Nigeria’s future looks promising.

In addition to Senator Onyesoh, other notable figures, including Dr. Vitalis Emeka Obi, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning, and Hon. Kabir Tukura, Chairman of the House Committee on Special Duties, also delivered goodwill messages. The retreat highlighted the government’s commitment to fostering institutional effectiveness and addressing key national challenges.

As the dialogue progresses, Senator Onyesoh’s call for educational reform is expected to gain traction, potentially spurring changes that will better prepare future generations to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s progress across all sectors.
