Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has said that Ukraine will not join NATO as long as he remains in power.

While Ukraine has been seeking NATO membership for several months, and many countries support this bid, Slovakia has firmly voiced its opposition.

“As long as I am head of the Slovak government, I will direct the MPs that are under my control as chairman of the [ruling Smer] party never to agree to Ukraine’s joining NATO,” the leader said on the program O päť minút dvanásť.

This statement stands in stark contrast to the remarks made by NATO’s new Secretary General, Mark Rutte, who said last week that Ukraine is “closer than ever” to joining the alliance.

For a country to join NATO, all member states must unanimously approve its membership, as per the rules of the organization, which was founded in 1949. Other nations close to Russia may also use their veto to block Ukraine’s accession.

NATO has welcomed two new members this year: Sweden in March and Finland the following month.
