Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has thrown his weight behind a single term for elected officeholders, but rejects the idea of autonomy for local governments, calling it “against the principles of true federalism”.

Speaking at The Platform Democracy Day programme in Lagos, Soludo argued that a single term would allow leaders to focus on development rather than electioneering. He also proposed a single-parliament National Assembly to reduce costs.

But on local government autonomy, Soludo disagrees, saying it would take Nigeria back decades. Instead, he advocates for states to design their own local government systems and receive more fiscal powers from the Federal Government.

Soludo also called on President Bola Tinubu to address the country’s economic challenges, warning that printing more money would lead to inflation.

What do you think? Should Nigeria adopt a single term for politicians and reject LG autonomy? Share your thoughts!
