Sudanese Deputy Head of the Transitional Sovereign Council, Malik Agar, met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Friday, emphasizing Sudan’s intention to strengthen military and economic ties with Russia.
The meeting, held during the 27th International Economic Forum in St. Petersburg, underscored Sudan’s commitment to activating joint committees and agreements, including a bilateral military committee.
Agar, who arrived in St. Petersburg on June 3rd, expressed Sudan’s interest in deepening relations with Russia across various sectors, focusing on strategic, political, and economic collaboration.
He updated Lavrov on the current situation in Sudan, including military operations and the government’s plans for stabilization and peace.
Sudan hopes for Russia’s support in its reconstruction efforts, with the forum serving as a platform for economic opportunities.
Despite past pressure from Saudi Arabia to prevent this agreement, the conflict with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has led the Sudanese army to reconsider, indicating openness to similar bases from other countries.
The ongoing conflict in Sudan and international dynamics continue to shape the nation’s foreign policy and strategic decisions, as it navigates its partnerships and regional interests.
