US-sponsored peace talks aimed at ending the conflict in Sudan, one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, began in Geneva on Wednesday.

However, the talks appear to have started without the presence of the warring parties, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).

The United Nations has reported that thousands of children have been killed or injured in the conflict, which began in April last year, with five million children forced to flee their homes.

US Special Envoy Tom Perriello said that while preliminary engagements have been made with both sides, SAF has to commit to moving forward.

The talks, expected to last up to 10 days, aim to establish a concrete action plan to cease violence and full humanitarian access.
