A Swedish general has claimed that the current period is even more dangerous than the Cold War, largely due to Vladimir Putin’s erratic behaviour.
General Michael Claesson, who became the commander of the Swedish Armed Forces on Tuesday, argued that it’s difficult to predict what will happen today, making the situation more challenging to manage.
“There are many similarities, but in many ways, it’s more unpredictable than the Cold War. Back then, there were other mechanisms and different dialogues in place,” he told Swedish media SVT.
Like its Scandinavian neighbour Finland, Sweden applied for NATO membership shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Sweden officially joined the alliance in March this year.
Russia has repeatedly threatened to target NATO member countries.
