On Monday, Tanzanian police arrested several high-ranking opposition leaders, including former presidential candidate Tundu Lissu, and detained around 500 supporters in the southwestern city of Mbeya.
The arrests occurred as the opposition party, Chadema, planned to hold a rally to mark International Youth Day, which the police had previously banned, citing concerns of potential violence.
According to John Mrema, Chadema’s director of communications and foreign affairs, the arrests were made as party leaders gathered in the offices of Chadema in Nyassa region.
The party had planned to hold a rally with approximately 10,000 youth supporters, which the police banned on Sunday, accusing the party of planning violent demonstrations.
This development comes as Tanzania prepares for presidential and parliamentary elections in 2025, amid concerns about democratic progress and the government’s handling of opposition protests.
The opposition has been staging protests in recent months, calling on the government to address soaring living costs, ensure independent oversight of the electoral process, and withdraw controversial bills.
Since taking office in 2021, President Samia Suluhu Hassan has implemented some political reforms, including lifting a ban on opposition rallies imposed by her predecessor in 2016.

The Nigerian Air Force, NAF, says its personnel, under the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI, OPHK, on April 15, 2025, executed 2 highly successful air interdiction missions, targeting terrorist strongholds in Borno State’s Sambisa general area and the Southern Tumbuns.
Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information, Headquarters, Nigerian Air Force.in a statement said the first strike occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. in Kollaram, a known stronghold of insurgents.
Intelligence reports, supported by surveillance footage, confirmed the presence of high-value terrorist commanders in the area.
It said several structures, some equipped with solar panels, were identified as active terrorist hubs.
Nigerian Air Force assets carried out a precision strike on the location, eliminating several fighters and disabling key infrastructure.
A second precision strike followed at about 3:55pm in Arra, Sambisa. Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance missions had earlier detected clusters of terrorists, and real-time visuals confirmed the significant presence. Precision-guided munitions were employed, resulting in the effective destruction of targets and disruption of the group’s operational capabilities.

Haley Joel Osment may soon be facing criminal charges following an arrest earlier this month at Mammoth Mountain ski resort in California. The actor was taken into custody on April 8 after authorities received a call just before 2 p.m. reporting an allegedly intoxicated individual on the resort grounds.
According to official documents obtained by TMZ, ski patrol officers were already attending to Osment when law enforcement arrived. He was subsequently arrested for public intoxication and possession of a controlled substance. Authorities have sent the substance to a lab for analysis to determine its specific nature.
Osment was booked and later released, pending a decision from the Mono County District Attorney on whether to pursue charges.
Sources close to the actor suggest he has been under significant stress in recent months. Osment reportedly lost his home and belongings in the Altadena wildfire and has faced ongoing difficulties with his insurance provider, including a recent claim denial for a replacement residence.
This is not the actor’s first brush with alcohol-related legal issues. In 2006, Osment was involved in a serious crash after driving under the influence, sustaining shoulder and rib injuries when his vehicle struck a brick pillar. He later pleaded no contest to charges of DUI and marijuana possession and received a sentence that included three years’ probation, alcohol rehabilitation, mandatory AA meetings, and a $1,500 fine.
The Mono County District Attorney’s Office has not yet made a formal announcement regarding prosecution.
