Bishop Kukah highlights the lack of preparation by Buhari and Tinubu before taking on leadership roles in Nigeria.

Bishop Matthew Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto has expressed a critical view on the state of leadership in Nigeria.

He asserts that both President Bola Tinubu and his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, entered their roles without adequate preparation.

Referring to a pattern of “accidental leadership,” Bishop Kukah emphasized this trend during a keynote address at the commissioning of the new Start-Rite School building and the 4th Amaka Ndoma-Egba Memorial Lecture in Abuja.

He noted that Nigeria’s leaders often ascend to power unexpectedly, highlighting that President Tinubu, despite his claims of readiness, is facing significant challenges.

This cycle of unpreparedness extends back through several administrations, with each leader, from Jonathan to Obasanjo, having taken office under unforeseen circumstances.

The bishop concluded that while Nigeria has adopted democratic ideals, the process has consistently failed to yield effective leadership.
