Things to know about fresh explosion in Rivers State

Respite is yet to return to Rivers State as another explosion reportedly struck the Soku oil facility in the Akuku-Toru Local Government Area on Sunday, days after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the state.
The latest incident affected the Soku facility, operated by Nigeria Liquefied and Natural Gas Limited, marking the third in a series of attacks on critical infrastructure in Rivers State.
Text messages and calls to the company’s spokesperson, Andy Odeh, had yet to be answered at the time of filing this report.
Commenting on the reported explosion, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, said: “We have yet to receive any report of such an incident.”
An insider at NLNG stated that the company would address the situation on Monday.
However, the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre, YEAC-Nigeria, confirmed the explosion on Sunday.
“
An explosion accompanied by fireballs was heard and seen in the sky from the facility area, which is difficult to access. The fire is still ongoing at the time of this report, as shown in short videos shared with the organisation by youth volunteers of YEAC-Nigeria,” the centre said.
In sharp contrast, the Soku Kingdom has dismissed reports of an explosion as false.
The General Secretary of Soku Kingdom, Mr Witness Alasia, stated that it was a fire outbreak, not an explosion, along the Soku-Abua-Rumuji right of way, adding that the Soku gas plant—one of the major feeders of the nation’s economy—remains safe and fully operational.
“On behalf of the leadership of the Soku Kingdom, I write to debunk the falsehood circulating on social media that there was an explosion at the Soku Gas Plant. It is disheartening and worrisome that people would mischievously misinform the public with a baseless and untrue story.”
“The public should disregard this misleading and unverified report. We take this opportunity to assure everyone that Soku and its satellite communities are safe and calm. Regards,” part of the statement read.
The incident comes just days after an explosion rocked the Trans Niger Pipeline in the Bodo, Gokana, and Omwawriwa communities in the Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Similarly, on 19 March 2025, a fire broke out at the Port Harcourt refinery.
Recall that on 18 March 2025, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers and announced the suspension of democratically elected authorities.
On Thursday, the National Assembly approved Tinubu’s state of emergency declaration in Rivers State.
The sole administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd), has since assumed office following his appointment by Tinubu.

Tinubu’s Minister, Umahi Accused Of Demanding Hot $3x From Popular Business Woman

Nigeria’s Minister of Works and former Governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi, has been accused of refusing to pay a businesswoman, Tracynither Nicolas Ohiri, for promotional items she supplied during his 2014 governorship campaign.
The former governor led Ebonyi state for eight years from 2015 to 2023. Prior to that, he was a deputy governor of the state.
In an interview on Friday, Mrs Ohiri alleged that Umahi deliberately withheld the N200 million payment because she rejected his $exual advances.
She claimed that Umahi initially assured her she would be paid after he won the 2014 gubernatorial election. However, she said that when she began demanding her money, he attempted to turn their business relationship into a personal affair.
“When I supplied him with the goods, he told me that he did not have money, but that I should not worry. As soon as he finished contesting for the governorship election and won, he would repay me,” she said.
She alleged that after Umahi became governor, he started avoiding her calls and only engaged with her when she entertained his advances.
“When he won the election and became governor, I started asking him for my money, and he began asking me out,” she stated. “I gave him about a year and eight months before I started asking for my money. So, anytime I asked him for payment, he would say, ‘No problem, I’m going to pay you.’ But then he would bring up the topic he had been discussing with me.”
She further alleged that when she refused his advances, he became angry and stopped responding to her calls.
“When he mentioned it to me twice, he took offence and said, ‘Do you know that since I was born, no woman has said no to me?’ I said I don’t know about that, but I cannot have anything to do with you, sir. I want it to be purely business. The next thing he did was block me.”
Ohiri said that after years of trying to get her money, she has resorted to public protests and social media campaigns to demand payment.
Ohiri, a mother, lamented how Umahi’s alleged refusal to pay her has left her struggling financially while his son enjoys a luxurious lifestyle.
“Give me my money. I am a mother with children. I see your son flying private jets. The money your son is using to fly private jets is enough for you to pay me. You withheld my capital. I am a nursing mother; I need my payment. I have waited enough for nine years.”
Meanwhile, a similar controversy recently involved Senate President Godswill Akpabio, a key politician in Tinubu’s government.
In February 2025, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of sexual harassment, alleging that he made inappropriate advances toward her during a visit to his residence in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on December 8, 2023.
She claimed that Akpabio tacitly demanded sex from her to facilitate the consideration of her motions in the Senate.
Meanwhile, the Senate has suspended Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months, citing violations of legislative rules.

Members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, IMN, also known as the Shiites, launched an unprovoked attack on security operatives in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, on Friday.
Josephine Adeh, the Police Public Relations Officer of the FCT Command, said in a statement that during the attack, one security operative was killed, while two others were injured.
She explained that at about 2:20 pm on Friday, the FCT Police Command received a distress call reporting a violent assault on security personnel by IMN members armed with firearms, cutlasses, catapults, sticks, stones, petrol bombs, and other lethal weapons in the Banex area, Aminu Kano Crescent, Wuse 2.
“Upon swift deployment to the scene, police and security personnel encountered intense gunfire from the attackers, resulting in the serious injury of three security operatives. They were promptly transported to the National Hospital, where one was tragically pronounced dead,” she said.
The police spokesperson noted that about 19 suspects were arrested in connection with the incident, while others managed to escape.
She confirmed that normalcy has since been fully restored, and investigations are ongoing to ensure that all perpetrators are brought to justice.
“CP Ajao Saka Adewale emphasised that actions are being implemented to apprehend those responsible for this heinous act,” she added.
