In South Africa’s coastal city of George, a building collapse has resulted in the loss of at least five lives, with approximately 50 individuals still trapped under the rubble.
The collapse, which occurred on Monday afternoon, has left rescue teams working tirelessly to extricate survivors from the wreckage.
Of the 75 construction workers present during the collapse, 26 have been rescued thus far, but the fate of the remaining trapped individuals remains uncertain.
Tragically, five have been confirmed dead, with the injured rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with authorities focusing on reaching those still trapped beneath the debris. However, the process is arduous, with rescuers likening it to “searching for a needle in a haystack,” as they navigate through concrete and metal to reach survivors.
Investigations into the cause of the collapse are underway, with President Cyril Ramaphosa extending condolences to the affected families and urging swift action to rescue survivors.
