A shocking incident unfolded on Wednesday at the Volks bus stop on the Ojo/Iyana-Iba road in Lagos, where a heated argument between a soldier and a team of policemen escalated into tragedy, resulting in the death of Inspector Saka Ganiyu, a dedicated officer from the Task Force Unit, Oshodi Base.
The chaos began when the police team stopped an unregistered T4 Volkswagen commercial bus, driven by a soldier in civilian clothing, for driving against traffic. What started as a routine enforcement quickly spiraled out of control. The soldier, upon identifying himself, called for reinforcements from his colleagues at Ojo Cantonment Barracks.
The soldiers arrived equipped with dangerous weapons, launching an attack on the police team. A swift response from a reinforcement team of policemen helped repel the soldiers, but it was too late—Inspector Ganiyu had already suffered a fatal stab wound. Despite being rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for emergency treatment, he sadly succumbed to his injuries.
As of now, the policeman’s body has been transferred to the LASUTH morgue, while the soldier alleged to be responsible for the stabbing is in custody at the 9 Brigade in Ikeja Cantonment.
🔍 **Ongoing Investigation:** The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hudenyin, confirmed that an investigation is underway. The Army authorities expressed their deep regret over the incident, promising a thorough investigation and appropriate disciplinary measures to ensure justice is served.
A statement from Lt. Col. Olabisi Ayeni, Deputy Director of Public Relations for the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, highlighted the unfortunate nature of the incident, which stemmed from a traffic violation altercation.
Let’s hope for justice and peace in our communities.
