Libyans across factions and sectors are pressing for national unity and the organization of elections to resolve the country’s longstanding divisions, according to the United Nations deputy representative.

Stephanie Koury emphasized on Wednesday the urgent need for political leaders to break the impasse and move towards achieving stability in the oil-rich North African nation.

Since the NATO-backed overthrow of Moammar Gadhafi in 2011, Libya has been beset by chaos, leading to the establishment of rival administrations in the east and west supported by militias and foreign powers.

Efforts to hold elections last December faltered, exacerbating the political crisis as Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah refused to step down from his transitional role in Tripoli, prompting the east-based parliament to appoint its prime minister, Ossama Hammad.

Stephanie Koury, who has engaged extensively with Libyan stakeholders since taking over as the top UN official following Abdoulaye Bathily’s resignation, underscored the widespread Libyan desire for peace, stability, and reconciliation.

The situation in Libya remains tense amid ongoing efforts to unify the country politically and pave the way for overdue national elections.
