The House of Representatives has passed bill that could effectively ban Tiktok in the United States Unless it’s Chines parent company ByteDance divests the popular social video app within about six months.
The legislation, which passed with strong bipartisan support, now heads to the Senate where its future is less certain as senators appear divided on the issue.
While lawmakers from both parties have raised national security concerns over TikTok’s alleged ties to the Chinese government, the bill has also faced opposition from civil liberties groups and others who argue it would violate First Amendment rights.
