The United States has announced plans to withdraw all its troops from Niger within the next four months after the West African nation’s military government declared their presence illegal.

According to a joint statement from the Pentagon and Nigerien defense officials, approximately 1,000 U.S. military personnel will depart the country by September 15.

Niger’s military government, which came to power following a coup last year, has already expelled troops from former colonial power France and is seeking closer ties with Russia.

The U.S. began its pullout shortly after the order was issued, attempting to remove all lethal, hazardous, or classified equipment before the final departure.

Despite the withdrawal, the joint statement emphasized that U.S.-Niger relations in development areas would continue and that both nations remain committed to ongoing diplomatic dialogue.

The withdrawal follows a series of diplomatic negotiations, ensuring the safety of U.S. troops during the process.
