Former President Donald Trump has ignited a firestorm of criticism after questioning Vice President Kamala Harris’ racial identity during a contentious appearance at the National Association of Black Journalists convention on Wednesday.
Trump asked if Harris is “Indian or Black”, despite her long-standing self-identification as both Black and South Asian.
Harris, who was born in Oakland, California, to an Indian-born mother and Jamaican-born father, has consistently embraced her mixed heritage throughout her political career.
She is the first Black and first Asian-American vice president in US history.
Trump’s remarks were swiftly condemned by the White House, with Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre labeling them “repulsive” and “insulting”.
Jean-Pierre emphasized that individuals have the right to self-identify and that Trump’s comments were a clear attempt to divide Americans.
Harris’ campaign also denounced Trump’s statements, highlighting his history of hostility and divisiveness.
