Viktor Orbán’s advisor has admitted that he does not understand why Ukraine is putting up so much resistance to Russia.

In a video shared by the newspaper Mandiner, political director Balazs Orbán claimed that Hungary would not have fought back in the face of a Russian invasion, calling Ukraine’s response “irresponsible.”

Referencing Hungary’s failed 1956 uprising against the USSR, Balazs Orbán argued that President Zelensky’s decision to defend Ukraine resulted in unnecessary casualties.

“He dragged his country into a defensive war, many people died, territories were lost”, he said. “Yet if we had been asked, we would not have advised him, because in 1956 we learned that we had to be careful and watch out for precious Hungarian lives,” he added.

His comments drew sharp criticism from opposition leader Péter Magyar, who accused him of dishonoring the memory of Hungarian fighters.

“Such a person cannot hold public office alongside the Hungarian prime minister”, he wrote on X.
