A 40-year-old woman set herself on fire after her husband divorced her in Guri LGA, Jigawa, according to the police.
A police spokesman in Jigawa, Lawan Shiisu, confirmed the incident in a statement in Dutse on Friday.
Mr. Shiisu stated that the woman lived in Garin Mallam village.
“On Thursday at approximately 7:40 AM, the command received a heartbreaking report from Guri LGA about a woman, aged 40, from Garin Mallam village, who poured petrol on herself, set herself ablaze, and was burned beyond recognition on the outskirts of the village.
“Following this report, a squad of officers from the Guri Divisional Police Headquarters rushed to the scene and confirmed the incident. The officers transported the charred body to the hospital and later released the remains to the family for burial,” Mr. Shiisu said.
He explained that a preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased had suffered from depression for several months after her divorce.
According to him, the police commissioner, Ahmadu Abdullahi, urged people to submit their troubles to God and seek guidance.
Mr. Abdullahi also advised individuals to consult with their elders for advice and counseling on complex issues to prevent such tragic incidents.
