Manchester United kicked off their Premier League season with a thrilling 1-0 win over Fulham at Old Trafford on Friday, thanks to a late goal from debutant Joshua Zirkzee.

The Dutch international, who joined United from Bologna last month for £36.5m, came off the bench in the 60th minute and scored the winner in the 87th minute, poking in Alejandro Garnacho’s cross from close range.

Zirkzee’s goal saved United from a frustrating evening, as they struggled to break down Fulham’s defense despite creating several chances.

Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount came close to scoring but were denied by Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

United boss Erik ten Hag breathed a sigh of relief after the win, which comes after a tumultuous offseason. Ten Hag’s side were not at their best, but Zirkzee’s late heroics ensured they started the season with three points.

Fulham, who won at Old Trafford last season, were left rueing their missed chances, including a golden opportunity for Alex Iwobi that was thwarted by a poor pass from Andreas Pereira.

In the end, United held on for the win, which gave them a much-needed boost ahead of their next match.
